J.P Karliak, Founder of QueerVox joined the VO Peeps in June for a special Pride workout to give us an insider insight into the landscape of casting for LGBTQ+ voices in video games and animation. Voiceover actor, writer, and snappy dresser, JP is the voice of Boss Baby in The Boss Baby: Back in Business and Dante Crescendo in Trollstopia. He has played such iconic characters as Wile E. Coyote, the Tin Man, Willy Wonka, and a slew of Marvel heroes and villains including Loki, the Vision, Hawkeye, Wiccan, and even Black Cat.
JP told us about how to break into animation and video games, from LA or your home studio. JP also highlighted how celebrity voices increase opportunities for the average voice actor by providing big-budget movies that often have spin-offs. JP also covered how to land an agent
and what to include in our demos when submitting.
Words of Wisdom
Anything on a demo should have an entire emotional arc. Take the listener on a journey - JP The best way to get into an agent is a referral. Be active in the community - JP Celebrities may take the roles in a movie, but they likely won’t do a spin-off. That’s where we come in with a voice match - JP There’s such a glut of animated content right there, that there is room for the celebrities - JP
When auditioning, imagine individual lines as individual scenes. Give each line its own sense of place - JP
Make sure you look up the tone of the show when you are auditioning to make sure the character fits - JP
